Handspinning

Introduction to Handspinning

2.5-3 hrs | $150

Learn the art of handspinning on a spinning wheel with our introductory lesson. This one-on-one, in person instruction is perfect for 1st time spinners, or beginners seeking to make yarn independently.

The first portion of the lesson will cover the anatomy of the spinning wheel, basic wheel mechanics, analyze our fiber/staple length, and prepare commercially processed fiber for spinning. The second part of the lesson will concentrate on familiarization of the concepts of treadling, whorl/pulley choice, drafting, tension/take-up, and twist while producing a single. The introduction to spinning lesson typically results in the spinning of a portion of a single or multiple singles onto a bobbin, plying singles together, using a niddy-noddy to skein the yarn into a small sample, and discussing finishing.

The goal of this lesson is to introduce the tools, and skills needed to set the new spinner up for success to make and finish yarn on their own.

Introduction to Handspinning comes with our booklet that details the specifics of the lesson. Our booklets serve as a reference tool that enables the spinner to spin on their own as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Continued Handspinning

2.5-3 hrs | $150

Continued Spinning has been developed for spinners who have taken Introduction to Spinning, or are already making yarn on their own. Our focus in this workshop is to enable the spinner to begin to learn the foundational skills to make the specific yarns that they desire.

We will learn how to spin more consistent yarns, explore diameter control, execute wheel adjustments, learn basic worsted and woolen concepts, and introduce several drafting techniques. This is a wonderful lesson to take if wanting to break away from default spinning, and will result in samples to keep and reference in the future. The spinner will go home with an in-depth booklet of the workshop experience to review and support their spinning independently.

Intent Handspinning

2 hrs | $100

Intent Handspinning is for spinners who are comfortable making yarn. This lesson allows for the student to design their lesson around their specific needs. Perhaps the student would like to sharpen their skills in a certain area such as spinning a more consistent yarn, spinning thread, creating stand alone singles, making a specific yarn, or making art yarn. This targeted lesson lets the student choose their own direction, and takes 1.5-2 hours.  In order for us to prepare and gather materials, please connect with us via the connect button to describe the skills you are seeking to learn. Please bring your own fiber and spinning wheel.

Build a Yarn Spin Plan

2 hrs | $100

This workshop or lesson has been developed for spinners who have taken Introduction to Spinning, or are already making yarn on their own.  When planning an upcoming spin, we should have a good idea of the yarn we want as the final result. What project is the yarn for? Does it need to be strong, consistent, and dense for weaving warp? Maybe the yarn needs to be ultra soft, airy, and warm for a new winter hat. Perhaps we have a pattern that describes the yarn we need to spin.  This lesson provides support in developing, sampling, and documenting your project.

Bring fiber options you are considering for the project.
